The ear is viewed as a microcosm of the entire body, and is one of the most commonly used microsystems in eastern medicine. Any condition that exists in the body can effectively be treated in the ear. Auricular Acupuncture may be used as a primary mode of treatment or in conjunction with other modalities such as full body acupuncture, bodywork or herbal medicine. Auricular Acupuncture was first developed in France in the 1950’s by Dr. Paul Nogier. He began mapping his system and recognized that the ear corresponds to an inverted fetus, as shown above. His research was taken to China and was quickly accepted into mainstream medical treatments.
Diagnosis is based on the patient’s signs and symptoms, as well as any conditions that exist in the ear, such as discolorations, veins, etc. Very small, sterile, disposable needles are inserted very shallowly into different parts of the ear, depending on the diagnosis. Needles are removed at the end of treatment, although it is possible to treat the symptoms continuously at home with the insertion of tiny “semi-permanent” needles or with small seeds or magnets that are kept on with the help of tape.
The most commonly used specialty under this heading is called Acudetox, and is used worldwide to help individuals suffering from drug and alcohol dependency, post traumatic stress disorder, anger and violence, insomnia and anxiety. As the popularity of this modality increases, it applications are expanded as well.
In the hands of a skilled and licensed practitioner, Auricular Acupuncture is safe and highly beneficial. It is however important to have eaten a light meal within 2 hours of treatment. Few people report a feeling of light-headedness or headache that can be quickly alleviated, once the practitioner is notified on the onset of such symptoms.
